Outdoor Nativity Figures - Angels, Donkey, Mary and Joseph with Baby in a Manger
When considering outdoor nativity figures, it is worth spending a moment to think about the nativity story. Or rather, stories.
Although nativity is a word that is simply associated with a birth, in the modern era "the nativity" is mostly associated with the birth of Jesus Christ. Nativity figures, familiar in so many modern nativity scenes, are those most associated with Luke's version of the nativity, rather than that of Matthew.
Matthew's version, in book one of the Biblical New Testament, was confined to Herod and the journey of the three wise men, or three kings. It is Luke's third book of the New Testament which contains references to the nativity figures we know most today, and are familiar with in nativity scens small and large, indoors and outdoors.

The outdoor nativity figures shown here are all examples of figures for a lighted nativity scene. These are modern variants of those figures with which people have been familiar for centuries at Christmas. Left you have Joseph and Mary with baby in a manger. Above left is a standing donkey, while top left is a set of three angels, a heavenly adult angel and two child angels.
