Outdoor Nativity - A Vintage Christmas Tradition

For Christians, the Christmas nativity has always been a centerpiece of the Christmas season. In many places, and for many centuries, it has been a tradition for an outdoor nativity to be displayed in the approaching days to December 25.
Traditional outdoor nativities have usually been sited outside churches or in strategic public places around towns and villages. Some traditional styled nativity scenes have commonly appeared in gardens of practising Christians, and particularly gardens of Catholic families. In more modern times, though, a new breed of nativity sets and scenes has appeared, and many families now have elaborate outdoor Christmas decoration displays, mostly lit, that may incorporate the latest designs of decorations. These often include whole outdoor nativity scenes, or individual items such as shepherd, 3 wise men, manger, Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus, from which a full oudoor nativity can be set up.

When choosing what type of outdoor nativity to go for, the important choices you have to make are whether to buy a ready made scene, whether to go modern, and if so lit or unlit, and whether to go large or small. Of course, you need a Christmas display budget first for your entire outdoor decor.
Some of the smaller nativity scenes can be just as expensive, or even more so, especially those with well known designers such as Fontanini. These are really for indoor displays, as they would look lost in a yard or garden, and are easy for an opportunist thief to run off with. However, they can be a nice addition for a porch which you can lock at night.
