Outdoor nativity sets that depict the birth of Jesus Christ have become a familiar and beloved part of the Christmas celebration, and people of most all denominations of Christianity display some type of nativity scene during that very special time of year. At one time, only churches and the like would display nativity scenes, but today, they can be found just about anywhere around the world.

Outdoor nativity sets, whether the small or the life-size variety, are especially important to those who would like to keep the focus of the holiday on its original meaning, the virgin birth of Jesus to Mary and Joseph, tucked away in a stable over two thousand years ago.

Nativity scenes that replicate the birth of the baby Jesus for the patio, porch, or lawn are a great way to acknowledge the meaning of Christmas while beautifying your home, and with the large number of different sets available today, you should be able to find the perfect one for your needs and tastes. And, if you want to follow along with true tradition, it is said that you should not place the baby Jesus figure into his manger until Christmas morning, although that practice is really up to each individual.

Many of the outdoor nativity sets of today are modeled after crèches, which means crib or manger in French, that originated in Germany back in the 1600s. These usually depict the entire Holy Nativity scene with the Star of Bethlehem shining down upon the stable, the baby Jesus in the manger, the angel Gabriel, the shepherds and their animals, including goats, sheep, donkeys, camels and cows, the three wise men or three kings, and of course, Mary and Joseph.

There are generally two basic types of nativity sets and scenes you can choose from for displaying outside, those that are either pre-lit with lights that come along with the set, or unlit nativity sets or figurines and statues made from a variety of mediums made to resemble Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.

Some of the background materials used for the both types of sets include wood, poly-resin plastics, glass, metals, ceramics, as well as real or faux grass, stray, hay, and fabric for the embellishments and decorative touches.

Pre-lit nativity sets will, of course, need access to an electrical outlet and some strategically placed extension cords in order to work and be displayed as they are intended. The wattage of the bulbs needed, many of which will need to be purchased separately, will vary, but the average are usually within the 25 to 40 watt range. The star and angel that are to hang above the stable will most always have light bulbs placed inside to illuminate them, as well as the central figures of the Holy Family.

Unlit nativity sets are also molded and sculpted from different mediums including granite, stone, poly-resin and several others that are made to withstand the elements and intended for use outdoors. Some sets that are completely hollow inside will come along with instructions for filling with sand if added weight is needed, and you may also find that unlit sets are sometimes larger than their pre-lit counterparts, which is usually to ensure the details of the figures will still be noticed and appreciated by all.
